A cast of 130 young people from Bristol and surrounds has now been assembled to take on the challenge of creating a production of one of the world’s all time favourite musicals from scratch in just one weekend and then staging it at the city’s biggest performance venue.
The Bristol Hippodrome curtain will rise at 7.30pm on Sunday 23 April on The Big Act musical theatre school’s production of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN – a mere 48 hours after the company of ten to 21 year-olds first begin learning the show’s 23 songs, 15,000+ word script and around 8000 dance moves.
“It may sound like a crazy feat to attempt but it’s clearly an idea which appeals to the young people of Bristol and district”, says Martin Williams, who runs The Big Act, based in Wilson Place, St Pauls and will direct the show. “This year more than 400 young people answered our open call to take part and we saw so much talent it was really difficult having to choose just 130.”
SINGIN IN THE RAIN is the seventh show to get the 48 hour challenge treatment from The Big Act. Previous productions include WE WILL ROCK YOU, based on the songs of Queen; SEUSSICAL, inspired by Dr Seuss characters and Fame The Musical.
Martin Williams adds: “So far – touch wood – our challenge shows have always delighted audiences and I am confident SINGIN IN THE RAIN will do the same. It is such a feel-good show, packed with warm humour, great songs and thrilling dance routines. And it is bound to get extra lift when audiences see how much hard work, talent and zestful energy our youthful cast add to it.”
Tickets for the show are on sale from the Bristol Hippodrome now, priced from £19.40p. Booking fees don’t apply if buying in person from the Hippodrome box office at St Augustine Parade, Bristol. To book online, visit: http://www.atgtickets.com/.
