Raleigh Road, Southville, BristolThe Tobacco Factory Theatre came into existence in 1998 when George Ferguson, the owner of the building, invited Show of Strength Theatre Company to use part of the first floor of his recently acquired building as a theatre space.
Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory first produced work in the theatre in 2000 and the theatre became a full-time professional organisation in 2001, quickly becoming established as a favourite venue for a diverse and vibrant audience, garnering widespread critical acclaim and developing a national reputation.
In 2005 it became a charitable trust and in 2007 became a Key Arts Provider of Bristol city council.
The Tobacco Factory Theatre aims to produce and present life-changing performances, to entertain and challenge diverse audiences and to support and encourage established and emerging artists. It is a cultural flagship for the local community, an innovative social and cultural hub and an inspirational model of urban renewal that promotes appreciation of and participation in art as an essential ingredient of contemporary life. It will be an influential 21st century model of development, performance and learning.
