We create devised work with an emphasis placed upon the performers’ bodies as a site of experimentation and transformation. Our process is committed to exploring representations of women which articulate the complexity of contemporary female subjectivity. In both pieces to date we have taken as our starting point woman as a desiring subject, working with cross-gendered performance, autobiography, intertextuality and female sexual fantasy as our palette.
We work for around a year on the devising of each piece, immersing ourselves in the influences that ‘insist’ on a presence in the Studio. Fugitive Songs has revitalized our love affairs with the work of Tom Waits, Nick Cave and PJ Harvey; it has returned us to our roots in the work of Jerzy Grotowski, and reminded us how much our work owes to the films of David Lynch.
Our performance style has been described as ‘hilarious and excruciating’ at the same time’ in its attempt to chart a terrain that women ‘know’ but don’t have the words to describe.
