Hannah Marshall - Musician & Collaborater

hello There.

I am a cellist, musician & theatre maker. I have been making music for theatre, both live and resorded since 1997 when I started to become involved in productions at Battersea Arts centre in London. Since then I have made the scores for over 50 theatre and performance productions, working also with dancers, live art, and performing myself. As a musician my main area of performance is in improvised and experimental music. I am part of a number of groups who explore different techniques of playing, and perform unusual scores, as well as doing straight up freely improvised music. I am co-artistic director of a visual theatre company called 'The Ding Foundation', we make theatre that tells strange dream like stories, usually without words. I have worked with a fair amount of puppet companies and puppeteers including The Little Angel Theatre, Improbable theatre, Norwich Puppet Theatre, lost and Found Theatre, Indefinite articles & Wild Theatre.

Key Projects

Norwich Puppet Theatre's - Beauty and the Beast

Sound design for Norwich Puppet Theatre's Chrismas 2014 Production 'beauty and the beast'. Directed by Gavin Glover of Faulty Optic, with a cast of the Uk's moat talented Puppeteers. A Clever re-working of the original tale, set in 1930's America. "The combination of fantastic musical accompaniment, seamless set changes, clever lighting tricks and high quality stage presence made this family friendly and magical presentation of 'Beauty and the Beast' unforgettable. - Kelly Page

The Pardoners Tale - Tangere Arts

Performer in this simple and profound show with two live musicians, playing many instruments and Foley sound, and an amazing performer/actor. UK Tour. "Gary Lagden is stunning both as the slippery Pardoner and the trio of fools who think they can outwit death, and the musicians Christopher Preece and Hannah Marshall provide nifty support. They execute Gibson's evocative score with an array of instruments from double cello to bottles, and they also act as foley artists, creating the brilliant and sometimes gleefully grisly sound effects. This is never sinful, always wicked fun" Lyn Gardner - Guardian

Melody Loses Her Mojo - 20 Stories High

Musician performing with beatboxer Hobbit in this touring production. This unique piece of Hip Hop Theatre, fusing spoken word, music, dance, puppetry and street art."20 Stories High once again successfully tackles topics that most theatre companies wouldn't touch. Issue-based theatre has never been so innovative." Joanna Ing

Hanging By a Thread - The Ding Foundation

I am co-artistic Director of this small visual theatre company. This is our 3rd production which we have toured twice around the UK. It centres around a bed that comes to life and pulls the characters around it into it. "Intensly Moving" - Joyce macmillan The Scotsman

Jabberwocky - The Little Angel Theatre

a re-working of the famous nonsense poem by lewis Carrol. "It is classic fairytale stuff and is done here with wild imagination, and if the narrative isn't always entirely easy to follow, it doesn't matter, because you can always feel what it all means via the glorious visuals and the atmospheric soundscape" Lyn Gardner - Guardian
