 Big Green Week

BIG Green Week is a world-class week of big green ideas from 9th to 17th June 2012. Over 100 events are taking place across Bristol, including talks, music, comedy, film, theatre and art, all reflecting an environmental theme. And the week will culminate in the Festival of Nature, Europe’s largest free natural history festival. Over 50,000 visitors to the city are expected.

Big Green Week is jointly organised by Forum for the Future, Bristol Natural History Consortium, and Bristol Green Capital, and supported by Bristol City Council.

The Mobile Forest

As part of the Festival, a Mobile Forest will pop up and appear at different locations across the city centre, instantly transforming grey or unloved public spaces into inviting green oases for delegates and members of the public to take a moment to relax and see the city in a different way.

The Mobile Forest will appear as a fleet of shopping trolleys planted with young trees. A team of Forest Guardians will guide the Mobile Forest, help engage the public and ensure its safe use.

Why The Mobile Forest?

Bristol BIG Green Week aims to sow seeds of change and inspire greener ways of living. This living, growing, mobile green hub will provide a practical demonstration of what a greener future could mean and stimulate debate about a number of important issues, including:

  • What is the value of trees and forests to people’s health and happiness, especially in cities where they are often in short supply?
  • What kinds of small interventions can have the biggest impact on making our cities feel and look greener?
  • How can engaging in green issues be made light-touch and playful?

Get involved

The Mobile Forest will be created in Hartcliffe, South Bristol and then a procession on the opening day of the Festival (Saturday 9th June) will take the Forest into the city centre.

The Mobile Forest will be based at Colston Hall- the main festival hub for Big Green Week, and take tours into the city centre, including iconic Bristol spaces and places such as the Suspension Bridge, Part Street and Broadmead. The Mobile Forest will then return to Hartcliffe for planting in community projects.

There are lots of ways to be involved, including:

  • Helping to create and plant up the Forest;
  • Being part of the processions from and to Hartcliffe;
  • Curating a tour for the Mobile Forest around the city centre;
  • Becoming a Mobile Forest Guardian.
