Funding for work by disabled artists: Unlimited Awards 2018

Miriam Battye

Live Dates: Deadline 6 November

Unlimited

It’s that time again – Unlimited's application portal is open and hungry for artists’ ideas and project proposals. This year, we’re not supporting full commissions but making smaller awards for artists who are starting out or are embarking on a new idea. Unlimited Project Manager Clara Giraud tells us about the different strands and how to apply.

Unlimited Awards 2018: two strands

Emerging Artist Awards: this funding opportunity is for artists that identify as disabled and are still in the early stages of their career. Unlimited does not consider ‘emerging’ as something linked with age (i.e. being young), but rather linked to how established, experienced and connected an artist is. These awards can fund a very early research and development of an artistic idea, the production of a new art work, or focus on exploring participative elements such as a workshop series. They are up to £10,000 and for artists based anywhere in the United Kingdom. Read more about this strand.

Research and Development Awards: these awards have been recurring as part of Unlimited’s callouts since 2014, supporting established disabled artists to explore new artistic ideas. This is a rare opportunity to access up to £10,000 to investigate a new project in its early stages, without the commitment of creating a finished work thus allowing ideas to evolve and transform. They are suitable for artists based in England and Wales. Read more about this strand

Research and Development: Wellcome-supported Award

Unlimited is funded by Arts Council England, Arts Council Wales, Spirit of 2012, British Council, and for the first time, we have teamed up with Wellcome Trust in order to fund one of the Research and Development Awards. The award will be specifically for a project tackling themes of biomedical science, as relevant to Wellcome’s usual funding criteria. This new partnership enables us to support a greater range of artists and create meaningful relationships with other funders of the arts. Let us know when you’re applying if the themes of your work are such that you can be considered for this award.

Application Process

We’ve tried to streamline the process so that it is straightforward for artists, while giving the selection panels the necessary information to make decisions. First, artists are invited to submit an Expression of Interest by 6 November 2017, which focuses on the core of their idea for their proposal. In December, some of these Expressions of Interests will be shortlisted and applicants will be invited to submit a Full Application, including more detailed project planning and budgeting. The deadline for Full Applications will be 5 February 2018. We have an online portal, with written questions, but we are always open to having a conversation about different formats of submission.

Have a look at the callouts for each of the award strands. And do consult our Frequently Asked Questions page if you’re stuck.

If your question hasn’t been answered then do please get in touch at info@weareunlimited.co.uk – we’re happy to talk about anything regarding eligibility, access and support to submit an application.

We can’t wait to hear your ideas. Unlimited funds all sorts of projects, and if you wonder what we mean by that, have a read of our ‘What does Unlimited fund?’ blog by Jo Verrent, Senior Producer.
