Sleepdogs

Sleepdogs is a collaboration between director/producer Tanuja Amarasuriya and  writer/composer Timothy X Atack. We make theatre, film and audio work, particularly exploring how we exist as humans in a technologically and culturally dispersed world. Both of us grew up halfway round the world from where we were born, so ideas of place and culture-clash tend to infect our work instinctively. We create emotionally resonant experiences for audiences – gripping stories that go to unexpected places; atmospheres that transform the space we’re in; invitations to imagine new myths for how we might live well together.

Sleepdogs’ work is characterised by surprising storytelling and intricate sound design. We use visceral, sensory aesthetics to immerse audiences in our storyworlds. We use comedy as a vital tool for adventuring into dark places. Audiences regularly tell us that our work has an emotional intensity that sometimes takes a long time to process, and often resonates with them long after each show. We’ve had people email us months, sometimes years after they’ve encountered our work to tell us how it impacted with them.

Sleepdogs’ work has been developed and presented nationally and internationally including at: the National Theatre (theShed and River Stage), Bristol Old Vic Ferment, Bristol Proms, Seattle International Film Festival, NexT International Film Festival (Bucharest), Sanctum at Bristol Temple Church, BBC Radio,  Brighton Festival (Caravan showcase of new English performance), Live Theatre (Newcastle), Manchester Royal Exchange Studio and BIOS (Athens).

We're residents at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. Tim also writes a lot for radio and TV. Tanuja is also Director of Research at Theatre Bristol.
