We are Unique Voice. A fresh, new and dynamic theatre company based in Bristol dedicated to vocalising current issues in society with raw passion and creativity.
Unique Voice originally established from Crash N Burn Theatre Company. The members met in 2007 at the Wessex Academy of Performing Arts. A fierce passion emerged between these four young creative people, which quickly lead to the birth of the company now known as “Unique Voice”.
A unity formed within the company when exploring the Spanish play, The House of Bernarda Alba. They ripped the piece apart from its very core to re-invent the story, creating a brand new adaptation of the classic play and, in-turn, found their own personal style and power, which involves physical theatre narrated by method acting. With rigorous rehearsal and a fierce determination to succeed, the company had very successful performances in Somerset.
Through fundraising money locally the company made their debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2008. They were approached and warmly invited to perform under the “Free Fringe association” an organization dedicated to giving new companies the arena to present their work, for free.
Unique Voice seized this opportunity and presented their adaptation of “The House of Bernarda Alba.” Through relentless promotion of their secluded and un-established venue, came the company’s first overwhelming success in Edinburgh. The show was witnessed by a sold out audience who were struck with a gripping take on five sisters struggling to accept their fate.
Unique voice grew attached to the South West over their three year university period and now, as graduates, they are based in Bristol. Unique voice aims to vocalise current issues in society with raw passion and creativity, inspiring other actors and artists to challenge political matters in their profession, and to open their minds to the huge variety of possibilities to express political values through art. As well as this, Unique Voice wish to give opportunities for new young actors and technical crew to work on their productions, gaining experience in the real world and an opportunity to showcase their talent and expertise.
Using local, Bristol based designers, Unique Voice have had a logo, website and project poster designed for them. Through this, they have not only acquired some fantastic work, but formed more links with the Bristol creative scene.
They have been funded for this in part by generous donations (£200 donated by Chris Gilbert ‘Spanish Guitar Centre’ Bristol) but also through general support and kindness (‘For the Love of Robert’ poster designed by Sam Jarrah - Graphic Designer).
The company were overwhelmed when Tom Clark (JAC Trust) responded to their funding appeal and offered £1000 for company necessities as well as a research trip for their up and coming show.
Unique voice’s sights are now set on their new production. Excited, determined and passionate, the company have started the journey of rehearsal and plan to debut ‘For the Love of Robert’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2010.
The company have been busy planning and preparing their debut piece titled “For the Love of Robert. The company’s intention is to devise a professional theatre production that is based on the tragic murder of Robert McCartney. The piece will be particularly focusing on the aftermath of a social and political tragedy and the struggle of Roberts’s family attempting to bring his killers to trial. Unique Voice was inspired to take on this touching story when they discovered that the sisters and fiancé of Robert had publically campaigned for his murder to be brought to justice. To make the piece work theatrically the company have closely identified factors of the story that can work as a performance. Unique Voice plan to uncover the political and social depth to this tragedy with raw passion and physical expression. The physical exploration aspects represent the emotional connection of the women that they share both to each other and to the journey they embark on to find justice. In addition the physicality engages the audience with an intimate, private view of the family away from the public eye. The narrative will be told through multimedia, using news reports and footage to enhance the audience’s understanding of the depth and weight to the story. To carry out any of these ideas/plans accurately and with the passion and justice it quite rightly deserves, Unique Voice sought approval and guidance from the most accurate of sources, the Sisters themselves. Unique Voice collectively travelled to Belfast in November to meet the McCartney sisters, political journalists and former IRA members….
The piece has been welcomed to perform at renowned theatre institutions later this year such as the Tobacco Factory in Bristol and the Miskin Theatre in Kent where the company will also hold workshops. Unique Voice also hopes to return to their artistic home Bath Spa University at some point during the year to perform and create opportunities for undergraduates to work alongside the company. Prior to this “For the love of Robert” will make its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer where the company hope to exceed previous visits with a groundbreaking piece that will put Unique Voice on the map for 2010!
Unique Voice has personally received kind funding in its starting year. However to continue to grow we rely on the generosity and input from general public and authorities. As starting entrepreneurs and graduates we are artistically ready to present our work. We do lack funding to support our production and put the exciting plans into action. As a starting company we relish the opportunity to work along side new artists and professionals for a number of different elements within our company.
