In this masterclass, participants will explore how to create performance from the simplest of source materials. They will also work on building up a performer’s core skills by looking closely at: the importance and use of movement on stage and how movement carries meaning; how to create and sustain imaginary spaces on stage; understanding how rhythm works in performance; and how to enjoy improvisation and release creativity within it. A focus on collaboration is key to the Company’s teaching: participants will explore all these skills together through a wide range of games and exercises and learn how to work instinctively as an ensemble.

There won’t be one starting point and there won’t be any answers. What there will be are lots of questions, a chance to turn some earth over together and some ways of thinking about things.

Complicite is an international touring theatre company based in London. Led by Artistic Director Simon McBurney, the Company has won over 50 major awards worldwide. Complicite’s most recent production The Master and Margarita opened the Avignon Festival 2011 and, following an international tour, will return to London’s Barbican in December this year. Now approaching its 30th birthday, Complicite continues to adapt and experiment, branching into opera, film and children’s theatre.

Richard Katz is a member of Complicite’s core ensemble. Currently performing in The Master and Margarita, he has also worked with Complicite on Measure for Measure, Strange Poetry, Mnemonic and The Noise of Time. Additionally, he has worked extensively with the RSC, Improbable, The Globe and Told by an Idiot.
