Engineers Blue
Brass Works Theatre - (above the Kingswood Heritage Museum) Tower Lane, Warmley, BS30 8XT
Its 1941, and the Government has just introduced female conscription to enable the country to meet the relentless demand for machinery to support the war effort. While Britain’s engineering output is breaking records, the housewives, mothers and daughters drafted to work in a former motorcycle factory on the outskirts of Bristol are being made to feel far from welcome. Ivy Drake, a young volunteer at the renowned Douglas Engineering Company, Kingswood, realises she has a fight of her own against Cliff, a wounded Dunkirk veteran, and Pete, a young entrepreneur hoping to make a fast buck on the black market economy that has sprung up during the city’s blackouts.
Set during one of the most tense summers of the Second World War; when Britain and its colonies stood alone against Nazi Germany, Engineers’ Blue, is written by Kingswood-born actor and playwright Adrian Harris and is informed by local events; exploring the city’s finest – and also literally darkest – hours as its citizens search for hope and humanity among the blackouts and the bombings.
The theatre has disabled access, on site car parking and a licenced bar that will be open for refreshments.
Brass Works Theatre is a brand new venue in Warmley near Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, and is supported using public funding by National Lottery through Arts Council England.
