OperaUpClose burst onto the opera scene in 2009 with this fresh and brilliantly youthful production of Puccini’s masterpiece La bohème.
It opened in a pub theatre in London before transferring to the West End, winning the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Opera and the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Off-West End Production. We are thrilled to welcome OperaUpClose to the TFT this season.
Follow the ups and downs of idealistic students Rodolfo and Marcello and their girlfriends Mimi and Musetta, as they bicker, party, try to make ends meet and follow their dreams. The comedy of the first half of this hugely popular production heightens its tragic ending, with theatre-goers saying this 21st century Bohème affected them like no other. Now for the first time, Bristol audiences have the chance to experience the show that changed the face of opera.
We are delighted to have started programming opera in the TFT Spring/Summer season, to complement our perennially popular annual Opera Project slot in October. A departure from the more traditional, OperaUpClose use young professional singers, a piano and a completely fresh look at one of the most popular operas ever written that we guarantee will leave you wanting more.
