Ernest Thompson’s play is best known for its 1981 Academy Award winning performances by Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn for “Best Picture”, “Best Actor” and “Best Actress”. The play opened on Broadway in February 1979 and ran for 126 performances winning a “Tony” award for the Best Actress in a play.

Jane Fonda purchased the rights to the play specifically for her father, Henry Fonda, to play the role of the cantankerous Norman Thayer. The father-daughter rift that was depicted in the play and on screen closely paralleled the real-life relationship between the two “Fondas”.

This is a story of a love that has stood the test of time for over 48 years. Aging couple, Ethel and Norman Thayer, continue their long tradition of spending each summer at their cottage on a lake called Golden Pond, in the far reaches of northern New England.

Norman is a curmudgeon with an estranged relationship with his daughter Chelsea. At Golden Pond he and his wife Ethel never the less agree to take care of Billy, the son of Chelsea’s new boyfriend, and a most unexpected relationship blooms between the three of them.

Director Sue Stobbs says life can be beautiful, if full of tears and that you don't have to have seen the play to guess what happens to Norman's gentle misanthropy, especially to his feelings toward Chelsea, after he and Ethel spend a month taking care of Billy.

“I would describe On Golden Pond as a ‘good old bit of cheddar’ offering performances and characters of rare quality. It is a treasure for many reasons but the best one I can think of is that I could believe in its major characters and their relationships, and in the things they felt for one another. This production will have the audiences leaving the theatre feeling good and warm and with a smile on their faces”.

On Golden Pond will be performed from December 12th to 16th at 7.30pm in the Kelvin Players Studio Theatre at 252b Gloucester Road. Tickets are £12 (£10 concessions), available from www.kelvinplayers.co.uk. Or, call the box office on 0117 924 0899.
