If you haven’t heard about Circus250 yet, it is the co-ordinating body for all the activity happening nationwide to celebrate 250 years of circus in 2018, 250 years since Philip Astley created the first ring based circus in London, on an abandoned patch of land near London’s Waterloo.
Circus250 is about enabling pioneering work, forging new partnerships, building new audiences and embedding circus at the heart of our culture – in the ground-breaking spirit of Astley.
Bristol has been selected as one of the cities of circus, and Circus250 is an opportunity to celebrate and share circus as an art form; from the traditional to the contemporary.
Circus250 provides the framework and scaffolding within which all activities take place, whether in theatres, rings, outdoors, archives, museums, schools, libraries. The framework is:
- Six Cities of Circus – London, Bristol, Blackpool, Belfast, Norwich/Great Yarmouth, Newcastle under Lyme
- Highlights Programme chosen by a Guest Director – excellent and exciting activity happening anywhere
- Nationwide activities – from workshops to walks, small scale community circus to talks – as part of the broad range of participation in 2018
In the lead up to Circus250, you are invited to an Open Meeting at Circomedia, Portland Square on September 22nd from 2-5pm. Find out more about the meeting here.
