Hosted by Living Spit and Theatre Bristol
Living Spit has been going for nearly ten years and they’re about to open a show in London’s glittering West End (or the back of a pub in Islington anyway). They’ve also taken over the running of a small theatre in Clevedon: Theatre Shop. They say:
We must be doing something right, but we’re regularly baffled by how we manage to keep it going. We look around Bristol and the South West and we see that the attrition rate of smaller scale theatre companies, including companies that we really admire, is frightening. In such a theatrically rich region, with such supportive audiences, we’d like to think that maybe more companies might be able to survive and thrive if we did things slightly differently. With the support of Bristol Old Vic and Theatre Bristol we’d like to talk about this.
We’d like to invite you to an event we’re holding: Bristol International Theatre Symposium (aka Living Spit’s BITS). It’s in our theatre on Friday 13th March and we hope that we can learn from each other and maybe all make things a bit easier for ourselves. As a kick-off, we have made a list of things we’d like to know about other companies, below. We’re happy to share this information for Living Spit.
We hope this will be a great opportunity to share and learn trade secrets, meet up with other regional artists, find out what our expertise is as a region, and where we could benefit from knowing more. We really hope to see you there.
Questions: What is your ratio of grants to earned income? / What length of runs do you do, and do you find that a long run somewhere is really helpful? / Where have you built up audiences? / How long do you rehearse, and does it tend to be in a block? / Can you manage intermittent single performances on a tour, or do you always book blocks of time? / Does your company own stuff (vans, lights, amps etc)? / Is the company the full-time job of company members?
Refreshments will be provided.
Theatre Shop is in the pedestrianised square behind B&M Bargains, tucked between Superdrug and Boots.
We recommend parking in B&M Bargains car park and walking across Queens Square where you’ll find Theatre Shop.
