Òran Work Centre presents:

Excavating Freedom: Unlocking The Potential Of The Performer

‘Excavating Freedom: Unlocking the potential of the performer’, is a new workshop by Òran Work Centre. The workshop is a unique opportunity for performers and artists to work within a playful and focussed work space to excavate the vital principals that will unlock the power, rigour and spontaneity of the performer.

In the Work Centre’s signature style, the work is designed to enable individual excavation, creating an atmosphere of personal research while nurturing the findings of the group and developing the power and skill of the performer.

The work is open to artists and performance practitioners of any kind and, while physically demanding, is designed to be accessible to all.

Participants will be able to develop skills in physical theatre, contact improvisation and reactive techniques to sharpen the performers body, and discover what it means to be alive and dynamic players within an ensemble environment.

Feedback from previous participants:

“A playful turning back of the clock”

“I received a gentle, powerful, surprising reconnection with the truth and power of my body

“A safe environment to connect in a deep, honest way and to meet, face and move beyond our edges.”

“A unique experience.”

The workshop will be led by Òran Work Centre directors Henry McGrath and Eleanor Buchan.

Henry McGrath was an associate artist at the internationally acclaimed Polish group, Song of the Goat theatre where he toured on all projects since 2014. He is Artistic Director at Eden’s Cave Theatre and Deputy Artistic Director at Animikii Theatre. He regularly runs acting and physical theatre workshops at the ‘Northern Theatre Laboratory’ and teaches at Plymouth Conservatoire and Manchester University.

Eleanor Buchan is co-founder of Eden’s Cave Theatre and a performer focused on storytelling traditions and ritual practice. She has performed extensively with the award-winning 1927 and acclaimed site-responsive company Dante Or Die. Eleanor is Co-Artistic Director of The Shadow Travellers, a storytelling company engaged in researching the mythic imagination, and Associate Lecturer in contemporary British theatre at Ithaca University, London.

‘Excavating Freedom’ will be the beginning of regular ‘Research Cycles’ in Bristol dedicated to the investigation of freedom on stage, in the rehearsal room and for private practice.
