IETM Audience Explorations Guidebook published, featuring Theatre Bristol

Regularly discussed, largely (ab)used, often misunderstood: the term audience development is undoubtedly a tricky one.

Goran Tomka (UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy and Management, University of Arts Belgrade, Serbia) has written a publication for IETM that explores the relationship between artist, art and audiences in all its messy complexity.

In a clear and insightful overview he unpicks the ways in which we talk about and connect with audiences, drawing attention to the interests of the state and the market in manipulating ‘audience development.’ He uses interviews with practitioners and producers, including Theatre Bristol, to suggest alternative ways of working with and understanding audiences, and offers some tools for becoming more attentive to people who watch and participate in performance.

Audience Explorations – Guidebook for hopefully seeking the audience is complemented by a range of interesting resources on the topic, which you can download here from the IETM website.
