The work

“I want to research & develop a new theatre show, MasterShit – a study of success, perfectionism, shame, sugar addiction, dental health & mental health.

Following one woman’s journey through a dystopian TV cooking competition where society’s desire to airbrush uncomfortable realities & silence inconvenient voices is magnified & grotesque. The process will test out ideas, approaches, artistic collaborations & academic research relationships – including 2 sharings of work-in-progress at prominent South West festivals (Theatre Fest West/Strike a Light) – resulting in a clear plan to make the show. The project is designed to challenge my practice as a relatively new theatre maker & continue my exploration of auto-ethnographic mental health/trauma narratives.” Viv Gordon.

About Viv Gordon

Viv is an artist and mental health campaigner. She is committed to exploring access and inclusion for artists and audiences with mental health needs. She has written, performed and toured 2 shows – I am Joan and PreScribed. Viv Gordon lives with the long term mental health condition Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She makes auto ethnographic work, which creatively explores trauma, mental health and childhood sexual abuse narratives. To do this, Viv has to manage dissociative symptoms, triggers and the impact of adrenaline and self-disclosure. To navigate this challenging territory, she is experimenting with a range of working practices which develop a safe, inclusive and enabling environment. She is feeling her way and learning how to do this, with the conviction that this will allow courageous and authentic work to emerge. Some practices she is currently employing include a basic mental health induction for all collaborators, working with an enabler in the rehearsal room and on tour, having regular supervision from a Dance Movement Therapist throughout making and touring work and creating an emotionally intelligent working environment where mental health is always at the heart of the process.
