Casting Call: Radio Zummerset

Radio Zummerset is a new audio play paying homage to the tradition of local community radio. Featuring eclectic radio personalities and bombastic local news stories, Radio Zummerzet will explore a picture of the country through local voices and rural responses to the Covid-19 crisis.

We’re going to create 3 x 30 minute episodes of Radio Zummerzet, including mock interviews with ‘local characters’, phone-in competitions, and highlighting local artists/musicians. Each episode will be initially distributed across community radio stations in Somerset as well as being made available through Wassail’s website and social media channels.

Radio Zummerzet has been commissioned as part of Wassail’s Somerset Emergency Theatre programme, which has been funded by Arts Council England.

Casting Requirements.

We’re recruiting for a range of roles including (but not limited to) a co-host or co-hosts, and special guests. Specific parts/characters will be developed in partnership by the cast and project lead Jesse Briton (Wassail’s Artistic Associate). The resulting script will be built from this joint work, and Artists will share a co-creation credit.

There are no age, gender or ethnicity restrictions on this casting. We’re particularly interested in actors who have a link to Somerset and experience of comedy, improvisation and/or voiceover work, however, these are not essential requirements.

Casting Process.

To apply please email your spotlight link (or CV) and a short introductory letter highlighting relevant skills/experience to [email protected] by 5pm on Friday 5th June.

We’ll be casting this project on a rolling basis as we develop each episode, so you may not hear back from us immediately. We will contact all applicants regardless of success, although we’re a small team with limited time, so please bear with us.

Some parts will require a short online casting process, others will not. For actors without audio reels it may be necessary to arrange a conversation via Zoom with the casting team.

We will make Radio Zummerzet between June and September.

We will work with individual actors to ensure their personal circumstances are taken into account when scheduling project commitments.

We pay a standard company rate of £150 p/day.

Actors will be used for varying lengths of time depending on the project needs. We’ll aim to be as flexible as possible around availability and will agree a schedule in advance of engagement.

For reference we imagine the shortest engagement being 1 day, and the longest as 10 days.

We actively encourage applications from disabled artists or artists who identify as disabled.

It is not necessary to have home recording equipment. However, if you have resources in this area please outline them in your application.
