Polly: The Heartbreak Opera – Casting Call
We are looking for strong BAME actor-singers for the part of Polly Peachum in Polly (The Heartbreak Opera) a radical, anarchic, Britney infused, punk retelling of John Gay’s banned play Polly, the sequel to The Beggar’s Opera.
Fusing the 18th Century text and our contemporary world, the play explores colonialism, 21st Century femininity, sexual politics, jealousy, greed and revenge.
Directed by Stephanie Kempson, Sally Cookson’s assistant on critically acclaimed Jane Eyre, with a score by Ben Osborn (Young Vic, Bristol Old Vic, Southwark Playhouse), design by Sam Wilde and produced by Marie Hamilton and Sharp Teeth Theatre.
The show’s first iteration was made in Berlin in 2017 and scratched in Bristol to a sell-out audience. The show is now being supported by Bristol Old Vic Ferment and Greenwich Theatre. It was also shortlisted for this year’s LET Award.

We are looking for a BAME female-identifying, highly skilled and bold actor-singer, who is happy getting down and dirty in our funny, angry, sexy, grotesque, cabaret world. They need to be a good deviser, be socially and politically conscious, with a fire for the themes of the play (feminism, colonialism, capitalism). It’s also very important that this person can fit in comfortably and happily into an already established ensemble. As a company we actively encourage diverse actors to apply.
This show has had interest from some exciting venues, and we are hoping to take it to Edinburgh Fringe in either 2020 or 2021.
Polly Peachum is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Peachum, two clever London crime lords. She has been oddly well brought up by them, with a fine education and, as a result, no longer gets along with her cunning, worldly and criminal parents. She is full of desire for Macheath, believes utterly in romance and fate, but in reality she is a naive 17yr old, in love with a man who does not care about her. She has a strong moral compass, but she can be catty and judgmental, she is determined, she is hopeful, and she is bold, though just because she’s normally too polite to behave like her parents, doesn’t mean she can’t. We are interested in exploring nuance in our representation of female characters, we are all flawed and beautiful, and all have the power to be cruel as well as kind to each other. This story charts Polly’s journey across an ocean and through tough circumstances, taking her from semi-clueless, somewhat vain, sexually frustrated ingenue to a bold warrior woman.

- A few lines about yourself, your background and interests.
- A video of the first few verses from a song that captures Polly from the description, it would be lovely to see you perform this song as what you see in Polly. Artists we picked as her influences were Britney Spears, FKA Twigs and Peaches but feel free to use a song you think is appropriate or encapsulates your abilities best.
- And a filmed 2 minute monologue that shows you as a performer. We’d particularly love anything funny, or angry, or heart-breaking, or all three.
We look forward to hearing from you!
