We are looking for a costume designer to work with us on our new outdoor theatre production – The band at the end of the world!
The band at the end of the world tells the story of the possible actual end of the world (as we know it) caused by humankind’s self-destruction, coupled with themes of shared collective consciousness/taking responsibility for the world we live in, told by a ludicrous cult of musical clowns.
There are two parts to the project:-
The touring show – a raucous, brass heavy, theatrical clown show. Performed from a mobile stage (The battle-church) by 5 performer/musicians. Part processional, part static; incorporating elements of spectacle in the form of fire, pyrotechnics and pneumatic air/water effects.
A large-scale participation project – Working with up to 40 local performers and musicians at several festivals to create/perform an epic version of the show.
You can find out a bit more about the project/see a video/some images of the R&D process here – http://ramshacklicious.com/bateotw.html
the costume designer will design/create costumes for 5 performers as well as working with a team of design students to design/create up to 40 costumes for the participation element of the project.
Aesthetically the costumes will draw influence from punk, traditional marching bands, military, mad max and sun ra and will have a DIY/ slightly grotesque feel to them.
The costumes will be topped off with exploding & smoking ceremonial, sculptural headwear which will be designed/created in collaboration with the set design team.
We are keen to work with a designer who can work with a range of materials.
The show is being created between February – April.
There is a design exploration day with the cast and designers on the 15th March
The main block of costume development will happen from 14th May – 25th May. With 4 more design/making days to be scheulded prior to these dates.
The participation design/creation dates with the design students are 14th – 25th May
The project is taking place in Bristol and Bath.
