The Production / Stage Manager will be responsible for supporting the successful development and staging of Four of Swords’ new project DOCTOR DRACULA.
DOCTOR DRACULA is an exciting multi-media, immersive theatre project that examines the symbolic role of blood in mythology, religion, and literature, in order to introduce cutting-edge, medical understandings of blood in the 21st century. Doctor Dracula is written, produced and performed by Four of Swords, a production company who use theatrical story-telling techniques in unusual and evocative places, to integrate actors’ performances with film projection and live music, to put audience members in the thick of the action and create intimate productions with popular appeal and educational value. Doctor Dracula has been informed by the academic expertise of Professor Nick Groom, and Dr Luke Pilling from the University of Exeter, to explore the cultural links between medicine and myth. The project is funded by the Wellcome Trust.
As well as charismatic actors presenting larger-than-life characters, the site-specific immersive theatre will include video projections detailing actual patients’ experiences of blood conditions such as haemochromatosis and anaemia. Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition caused by an overload of iron in the blood, found in about one in 200 people in the UK; however, only about one case in 5000 are ever diagnosed. A simple prevention and cure for haemochromatosis to give blood (which can be safely used by the NHS as a usual donation). Doctor Dracula will not only raise awareness of this condition, but medical professionals will also be on hand to administer simple blood tests, answer further questions, and drive recruitment for the NHS Give Blood programme.
