MUSIC CAPTAIN / CHORUS / APOTHECARY / SERVANT / AS CAST – male or female, any age, any ethnicity

The ever-present anchor for the audience – both outside the story and multi-roling within it. Strong musical skills required – particularly singing. Good sense of rhythm and at least one portable instrument playing will be needed.

ROMEO / AS CAST – male, late teens/early 20s, any ethnicity

Idealistic and passionate; witty and linguistically adept; not a fighter but skilled in a brawl if necessary. Emotionally raw and possibly not very good with women. Falls madly in love with Juliet the daughter of his family’s enemy. Torn between loyalties, Romeo is swept into violence and cannot escape his fate. Experience of hand-to-hand stage combat essential.

JULIET / AS CAST – female, late teens/early 20s, any ethnicity

Fiery, strong willed, and brave although kept cocooned by her family. Tough and headstrong. Falls deeply in love with Romeo, the son of her family’s enemy, and displays incredible courage in pursuing that love.

FRIAR LAURENCE / MONTAGUE / AS CAST – male, 40s/50s, any ethnicity

Confidante to Romeo. A natural peacemaker, he has the best intentions to both help the young lovers and to maintain peace between the two families. A role for an actor with a strong facility with language. Also doubles as Romeo’s father – a firebrand with a deep-set hatred of the Capulet family.

Strong singing ability required – both as solo and blending in harmony groups.

PRINCE / NURSE / AS CAST – female, late 30s/early 40s, any ethnicity

As Nurse: Juliet’s confidante. Distractible, big hearted and warm, unintentionally very funny. Requires an actress of great comedic AND dramatic depth, with an ability to shift quickly between both.

As Prince: the royal of the land and threatens deadly punishment in their frustrated desire to stop the long-running feud between the Capulets and Montagues. Given the respect of her office from everyone and is both admired and feared.

Strong singing ability required – both as solo and blending in harmony groups.

CAPULET / AS CAST – male, 40s/50s, any ethnicity

Juliet’s father; neglectful father, though one who loves his only daughter deeply. Though not involved in her day-to-day life, he has a deep desire for her to marry well. Seeking an actor capable of real fire and also real compassion.

Strong singing ability required – both as solo and blending in harmony groups.

MERCUTIO / PARIS / AS CAST – male, mid 20s-30s, any ethnicity

Two sides of one coin: As Mercutio he is Romeo’s best friend: a master of wit, imagination and playfulness. A brilliant mind and volatile temper; extroverted, sexually charged and charismatic. Advanced armed and unarmed stage combat skills essential.

As Paris: the suitor to Juliet most preferred by Capulet and kinsman to the Prince. A seemingly straitlaced good guy, with hints of darkness and the sense that he will be a controlling husband. Genuine affection for Juliet.

Strong singing skills (both solo and blending in harmony groups) an advantage.

BENVOLIO / AS CAST– male, early 20s, any ethnicity

Nephew to Montague and friend to Romeo. He is a natural peacekeeper but can hold his own in a fight if necessary. Has strength and compassion and comes across as an old soul. A loyal and a thoughtful presence.

Strong singing skills (both solo and blending in harmony groups) an advantage.

LADY CAPULET / AS CAST – female, 30s, any ethnicity

Juliet’s mother. Though she has left the day to day raising of Juliet to the Nurse, she is nevertheless very attached to her only child despite finding the role of mother uncomfortable. Neglectful, but loving. In the end, one who prioritizes the will of her husband over her daughter’s and regrets it.

Strong singing skills (both solo and blending in harmony groups) an advantage.

TYBALT / FRIAR JOHN / AS CAST – male, mid-20s, any ethnicity

As Tybalt: Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin. Hot-tempered and aggressive, quick to seek revenge, has no desire to end the Montague/Capulet feud. Extremely proud. Excellent fighter. Advanced armed and unarmed stage combat skills essential.

As Friar John: the antithesis of Tybalt, he is a Franciscan friar charged by Friar Laurence with taking the news of Juliet’s false death to Romeo in Mantua. Friar John is help up by a quarantine and the message never reaches Romeo.
