Call for Volunteers – ‘I went to a Marvellous Party’

The Theatre Collection are looking for volunteers to act as stewards for an exciting project with live artist Tom Marshman. The work ‘I Went to a Marvellous Party’ is a collaboration with artist Tom Marshman  inspired by the Archive of celebrated theatre designer Oliver Messel supported by Arts Council England.

The new work is framed around the familiarity of a dinner party, drawing on items in the Archive to bring to life the myriad characters which populate Messel’s inherently theatrical world. As ‘Master of Ceremonies’ Tom will perform different characters,  inviting visitors to interact with the work.

Stewards will be responsible for signposting visitors to the event space, sharing publicity outside the venue, engaging with the public and helping audiences feel at ease interacting with the work, and supporting the events manager to ensure the smooth running of the event. Note that the events are open all day and are not ticketed with drop-in visits encouraged.

Volunteers will gain:
• Knowledge of the Oliver Messel Archive and Theatre Collection more widely
• Experience and training in interpreting and sharing a live work with the public
• Experience of working with an accredited museum and archive
• Experience of events production and stewarding

All volunteers will be invited to a briefing session where they will be introduced to Tom and the event/production manager and will find out more about the work and be given training in how to facilitate public engagement during the events. You will also be shown material from the Archive and learn more about Oliver Messel and the Theatre Collection so that you feel comfortable talking to the public – prior knowledge of the theatre is not necessary. A briefing pack to take away with you will be provided.

Volunteers are asked to commit to stewarding a minimum of one full day (see dates below) and will also need to attend the briefing session. If you would like to do more than one day you are very welcome to sign-up for more dates.

The dates, times and locations are listed below:
• 18th February / 3-5pm / Theatre Collection, 21 Park Row, Bristol – Volunteer Briefing Session
• 2nd & 3rd March / 10am-4pm / The Vestibules, City Hall, College Green, Bristol
• 9th March / 10am-4pm / Trinity Centre, Old Market, Bristol
• 23rd & 24th March / 10am-4pm / Ashton Court Arts Mansion

Please note that all volunteers must be 18 years or over. Each shift will include regular breaks, lunch will be provided and travel expenses within Bristol via public transport can be reimbursed.

If you are interested, please email by 15 February 2019 with the subject matter ‘I went to a Marvellous Party Volunteer’ to register your interest by including your name and the dates that you would be interested in volunteering and we will get back to you ASAP.
