Casting call for improv comedy theatre show

Organiser: Bristol Improv Theatre

Profit share monthly show with potential for future corporate work.

Calling all actors, comedians and improvisers!

The Bish Bosh Bash! is a monthly improvised comedy show at the Bristol Improv Theatre in Clifton.

We’re looking for some talented and friendly humans to add to our existing casting pool.

Applications are particularly welcomed and encouraged from BAME and LGBT+ performers and artists.

The Bish Bosh Bash! is a high-energy, fun, action-packed, silly comedy show. Two teams of players go head-to-head challenging each other in a series of improvised games, songs and scenes, inspired by Australia’s The Big Hoo Haa, Theatresports(TM), Whose Line is it Anyway? and Shooting Stars. The second half involves a cliffhanger style narrative format with scene-work and storytelling. We have been enjoying packed audiences and recently received a 5-star review from Bristol 247.

Shows are the first Friday of the month and rehearsals are typically once a fortnight on Sunday evenings.

No experience of improv or knowledge of the above formats needed! Full training will be given during rehearsals. Please see below for the casting criteria.

A three-hour workshop style audition will be held on the 27th of April: 10 am – 1 pm, with callbacks in the afternoon, 2 pm – 5 pm.

If your application is successful, you will be invited by email for a workshop place.

All the auditions will take place at the Bristol Improv Theatre.

If you can’t make these dates but are keen to be considered, please specify this in your application and highlight any opportunities for the director to come and see your work.

If you would like to apply, please email [email protected]

Please send your performing CV/ Spotlight profile or a summary of your performing experience along with a brief answer to the question:

‘What is delighting or inspiring you right now and why?’

(This can be anything – art, books, theatre, comedy, humans, politics… Etc)

The application deadline is 12 pm, Sunday 14th April.

(PLEASE NOTE: This deadline has now been extended to 21st April)

If you have any questions regarding the show or application/ audition process, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Please read carefully and highlight any unavailability in your application. Rehearsals are typically every two weeks on a Sunday evening and shows are the 1st Friday of the month.

Imogen Palmer has been training in and performing improvised theatre and comedy for over 8 years, including sell-out runs with the improvised murder mystery ‘Murder She Didn’t Write’ (Edinburgh Fringe 2013-14), Soothplayers – the improvised Shakespeare show (Melbourne Fringe 2015-16, Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2016), Impro Melbourne (company member 2015-16), The Big Hoo Haa (company member 2016) and Closer Each Day (company member 2017-18). She started teaching actors improvisation whilst training as a member of the full-time ensemble of the Howard Fine Acting Studio (Melbourne) and has since taught at international festivals and for companies across the UK. She is currently an instructor for the Bristol Improv Theatre and regularly tops up her training with classes from improv masters including Patti Stiles (Loose Moose Theatre, Impro Melbourne), Jason Shotts (IO Chicago), Pgraph (Hideout Theatre), Jill Bernard (HUGE Theatre) and Mark Beltzman (Second City).

The Bristol Improv Theatre was founded in 2012 by a group of improvised performers, artists and theatre-makers. Our mission is to be an institution of spontaneous, collaborative, and creative theatre, a resource for ambitious artists and audiences, and a home for all those whom improvised work touches. In 2017, the BIT relaunched its temporary venue on St. Paul’s Road, Clifton as a full-time theatre space. Our newly refurbished, 100-seat, multi-space venue is the first permanently established theatre for improvised performance in the UK.

Casting will be based on the following criteria:

Players who are open to performing with people they may never have played with before,  to taking direction and learning on their feet.

Performers who demonstrate courage in games and scene work, who take risks and dare to be silly.

Performers who demonstrate respect for their peers both on stage and off, and a sensitivity for dealing with challenging material if it pops up on stage.

Fun and Playfulness

At its core, this show is a silly, daft comedy show. This does not mean you need to demonstrate that you are the funniest person in the room! Committing to characters, listening and supporting your scene partners are much more important than how many jokes you can crack BUT we are looking for performers who are ready to bring a sense of playfulness and fun to the rehearsal room and the stage.

A tough cookie to measure but at the end of the day, we’re looking for a company which will spark off each other and take joy in delighting, inspiring and (respectfully) causing mischief with their fellow players on stage.
