Essentially DanceSpace Bristol is a studio to hire in the heart of Bristol, but where time and resources allow the project aims to move beyond basic hire and support interesting and progressive dance activity through making our space as accessible as possible; assisting in networking and promotion of projects using the space.

All our core activity is unfunded and we currently have one member of part-time staff.

Current partnerships:

Dance Hub – A collective of 22 independent artists who have made The Island their office space, their rent includes shared access to the studio when it’s not booked.

Theatre Bristol – Through Theatre Bristol’s Dance Producer they have given advice and guidance to the project and help fund the first round of Artist Residencies which took place in 2012.

Bristol Ferment  at Bristol Old Vic – Also helped to fund the first round of Artist Residencies in 2012.

Bristol City Council – BCC provided funding for the sprung dance floor and we currently house their temporary floor used for the Harbourside Festival.

The Island/Artspace Lifespace – The Island is a project set up and managed by ASLS and DanceSpace Bristol is a subproject of The Island. Through encouraging staff to develop ideas ASLS have  allowed DSB to form, giving the physical space and organisation structure needed to make it possible.

Further Information:

Set up in November 2010 DanceSpace Bristol affordable, creative space for dance in Bristol. The project was set up by a core group of independent dance artists with more than 10 years’ experience of working in dance in Bristol, and is a new collaboration with ArtSpace LifeSpace, the highly-respected, artist-led initiative that works in partnership with building owners to secure and re-use interesting, unusual and often difficult spaces as vibrant multi-use art venues.

Based at The Island, in the former Bridewell Police Station, DanceSpace Bristol shares a home with visual artists, musicians, circus performers and others. Its central location makes it easily accessible by public transport, bike and on foot.

DanceSpace Bristol aims to complement existing provision of regular dance classes and activities in the city by providing a dedicated space for workshops and rehearsal for a wide range of dance, movement and body-based work. We invite all interested artists to get in touch (email below).

Our priority is to maintain an artist-led, affordable, creative space that is inspiring and accessible to local and visiting artists working in contemporary dance and the various forms with which it intersects.

DanceSpace Bristol  aspires to offer a physical base and meeting point for independent dance artists to gather and share their work and ideas through regular skillshares, workshops, performances, research events and socials.

Classes in various disciplines from beginner to advanced run Monday to Friday with workshops, events and intensives programmed throughout.
