Bristol & West General Branch, is just one of a national network of branches within Equity – the UK trade union for professional performers and creative practitioners.

The branch is run by a committee of working creative practitioners. We organise regular Member Meet Ups, workshops and events. Go to our website and social media pages to find out more.

All members and student members are invited to attend our Meet Ups, to share views and experiences, discuss issues that are of importance to them and put proposals to Equity’s ruling body – the Equity Council.

Bristol & West General Branch joins Equity’s My Card My Union campaign

Portfolio image:
Members of Equity’s Bristol & West General Branch celebrated the union’s 90th birthday by joining in the My Card My Union campaign. From February 12th 2019, Equity is encouraging its members to post selfie photos to TwitterInstagram or Facebook with their membership card (remembering to obscure the membership number) and include the hashtags #MyCardMyUnion and #ProudtobeEquity. As part of the lead up to the campaign, members at the Bristol & West General Branch AGM, had a group photo taken with giant Equity cards demonstrating their pride and solidarity with the union. This photo was published on page 32 of the Spring 2019 Equity Magazine. Read more about the campaign here.

Equity Bristol & West General Branch returns to Bristol Old Vic as regular Meet Up Venue

Portfolio image:
The Bristol & West General Branch of Equity is pleased to announce that it will be once again hold its regular branch Meet Ups at the historic Bristol Old Vic theatre. Since our branch’s inception, the relationship with Bristol Old Vic has been an essential one. The branch was founded as a result of the closure of the theatre in 2007, and we campaigned heavily for its reopening. Once reopened, we held our monthly branch meetings at the theatre in 2009 and 2010, but this could not continue due to ongoing development works in the building. We campaigned against local government funding cuts to the theatre in 2017, and have been part of Equity’s dialogue with Bristol Old Vic as they have adjusted to the financial impact of these cuts. Now the building work is complete, we are delighted to be able to return to the theatre for our regular Meet Ups. Please keep any eye on our main branch page (equity.org.uk/bristolwestgen), and our social media channels, for dates of Meet Ups.

Funding approved for Equity South West Area Banner

Portfolio image:
Equity’s Bristol & West General Branch are delighted to announce that funding has been approved for an Equity South West Area banner, for use at festivals, demonstrations and other events. Our branch’s motion to the last Annual Representative Conference (ARC) was calling Equity to launch a ‘Campaign of Recognition’, to promote the union within our industry and beyond. The banner is part of our own efforts to fulfil that brief. UNKNOWN FUNDS To commission the making of this banner, the branch applied for a grant from Equity’s ‘Unknown Funds’. In January 2017, a High Court ruling permitted that a mystery £1 million discovered in Equity’s accounts can be used for union purposes as well as donated to charity [more info here]. The funding for the SW Area banner was approved at December 2018’s meeting of the Equity Council, and we extend our thanks to all Councillors who were involved in this decision.  NEXT STEPS As part of the application process, the branch launched a consultation with members, on some proposed designs. The final design will incorporate changes as a result of that feedback. As part of the funding rules, the branch was required to get quotes from three separate banner makers. We will now approach our preferred maker to commission the project, and look forward to unveiling it in the near future!
