Theatre West are one of the foremost producers of new writing in the south west, premiering over 50 new plays in recent years. We set up The Alma Tavern Theatre in Clifton where we produced annual seasons of new writing. We left there in 2014 and since then have produced new work in venues all around Bristol and across the region.
Theatre West was formed in 1990 by Joint Artistic Directors Alison Comley and Ann Stiddard with the aim of producing exciting, innovative and, above all, accessible theatre.
Our first productions were at the Showboat pub on Gloucester Road in Bristol. In 1997 we worked with the brewery Scottish and Newcastle to convert the function room of the Alma Tavern into a purpose built 50 seat theatre which became our home for some years. We produce an annual ten week season of new writing which, since leaving the Alma in 2014, we have performed in venues across Bristol and the south west.
We have also toured Latvia on several occasions where we have cemented strong cultural links, our last tour being in 2006 when we toured Little Pictures by Mike Akers to six towns.
