Specialises in one person shows, where personal and fictional prose is performed with a sardonic wit. And a projector.
Also writes,directs and edits short films, normally ridiculous.


Ellen Waddell is a writer, director, and performance artist who spent most of twenties being a “rock star,” playing bass for the indie pop band Los Campesinos! In that time they released 4 albums, toured worldwide, performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and their single You! Me! Dancing! became the soundtrack to an international Budweiser campaign. 

During her heady band days Ellen also wrote comedy and opinion pieces for McSweeney’s, MTV, Nerve.com, Bust magazine, The 405 and Forces Of Geek, as well as directing several music videos – including Future Of The Left’s, ‘I Am The Least of Your Problems,’ which was premiered by Rolling Stone.

In 2015 she was a recipient of an iShorts funding award from Creative England and the BFI. Network for her comedy short Stages, which she wrote and directed. It featured comedian Danielle Ward(Newswipe, The News Quiz) and since completion has been selected for the 2015 Aesthetica International Film Festival in York, The London Short Film Festival and the upcoming LOCO Comedy Festival.

She started performing comedy in 2014 and her first one-person show, Jean-Luc Picard and Me, autobiographical re-telling of a Star Trek obsession that left her trapped in a delicious fantasy world, sold out each of its runs in Bristol, before moving on to The Canvas in Shoreditch and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She regular performs comedy and storytelling in Bristol, and was recently commissioned by the Bristol Literature Festival to curate a new piece for the launch event at Watershed.

She featured on BBC Radio Bristol’s Speechbubble program – an “introducing” show for up and coming comedians in Bristol. You can hear her segment on “Guide To Success in 2015” here

She recently co-wrote her first feature “The Photographic Memory Recalls the Highlights of the Year, with Tom Betts, based on her short of the same title, for Western Edge Pictures. It is being supported by The Wellcome Trust Development Awards.
