Rod Maclachlan

I am a Bristol based, freelance lighting designer, video designer, VJ and production designer. I am also an artist working with kinetic sculpture and analogue projection.

I approach lighting and production design with the eye of a sculptor and enjoy blurring the lines between the performative and formal elements of a production and the use of lighting and projection.

For lighting design I will draw on any suitable light source from candles, slide projectors to lasers. I have had the pleasure of working on a wide range of projects from swimming pool concerts(Wetsounds) to Barbican performance (Spill Fest) and from animating Cathedrals (Light Up Bristol), to creating installations were ones breathing wirelessly controls the brightness of lights (Exhange- Inbetween Time).

Recently I was the Associate Artist for The Bristol Proms, at the Bristol Old Vic, designing live video for a series of classical concerts. As part of this role I had the unusual task of creating projections and lighting for the Purcell Opera Dido and Aeneas using only fire and candles.

In 2014 I designed the lighting for The Book Hive installation by Rusty Squid that evolved in the vaulted entrance of Bristol Central Library.

As an artist I have shown work at The Arnolfini, Tate Britain, The Bluecoat (Liverpool).
