I am a Spanish freelance based in Bristol since 2011. My formation covers mainly Lighting Technique and Design but also Rigging, Stage Machinery, Sound, First aid and Health and safety either for Spain and UK.
I studied Lighting Technique in 2006 in the prestigious CTE (Stage Technologies Centre) in Madrid where they only choose 12 students every two years for each discipline. In this course I also learned basics on Sound Technique and Stage Machinery as well as Rigging. This course covered either conventional and intelligent lights, advanced lighting desks, dimmer packs, CAD planning and work flow during the production. We also spend two weeks in each role involved in a theatre production, something that is quite unique in this school that helps to understand others points of view and therefore achieve a better team work.
Later on, I studied Lighting Design in 2009 in Artibus, a school on partnership with the Teatro de Madrid in which I received master classes from Mauricio Rinaldi from the famous Teatro Colón from Buenos Aires (Argentina) and from Nicolas Fichtel, another Lighting Designer from USA. You can find some of my lighting designs on my web page santiagomartinez.co.uk
Although I studied technique in 2006, my experience with the spectacle starts in the year 2000 in Spain when I joined a university theatre company while I was studying Biology. I acted for one year but then I decided to start doing technique for them and since then I’ve been working in hundreds of productions. Before I studied technique in 2006, I also toured for two years in Spain as an Assistant on Lighting Technique.
Then in 2011 I decided to move to Bristol due to the economic crisis that was striking Spain. In this city I have worked in all the main venues including Old Vic, Circomedia, Tobacco Factory, Arnolfini, Trinity Arts Centre, Bierkeller, Cube Cinema, etc.
