Misfits is a unique Bristol based theatre and social group, led by people with learning disabilities (PWLD). Our mission is to improve the life opportunities and aspirations of PWLD and to challenge their discrimination. We provide artistic and life skills development, emphasising independence, healthy living and self-advocacy. Our regular activities include Drama, Movement, Poetry and Wellbeing Workshops; Creative Training for professionals in the public & private sector, to challenge perceptions and practices; and Rhythm of the Night, our monthly inclusive nightclub for PWLD at The Trinity Centre.

Misfits Theatre Company is a user-led organisation with over 18 years of experience working creatively to meet the needs of People With Learning Disabilities (PWLD).

Our work is around expression and performance, using our member’s expertise and lived experiences to enable influence and participation in the community. We also focus on building and maintaining friendships, reducing social isolation and improving mental health and wellbeing.

We want to increase the confidence PWLD have in their abilities, taking their meaningful performances to new audiences, not only to entertain but also to educate and help disperse some of the misconceptions there are about PWLD. We want to increase social cohesion and tolerance for diversity but also change the perception of art produced by PWLD as being simply for community development or therapeutic purposes.
