Theatre Bristol is proud to announce that it has been selected to be one of Arts Council England’s (ACE) National Portfolio Organisations 2018-2022. The funding of £106,985 per year will give us the capacity to support hundreds of brilliant artists and organisations, many of whom are outside the Portfolio, to create great theatre rooted in Bristol and shared worldwide.
Over the next 10 years we want to see a fundamental shift in how people understand and value the role of art and artists in society, making them central to people’s lives and the places they live. In order to do this, we need to ensure a wider range of people value, participate in and make a living from brilliant art. We will use the investment from Arts Council England to help make this happen, continuing to champion the independent sector, and rolling out an ambitious programme to connect with as wide and diverse a community as possible. This includes improving our accessibility and reach, making our service more inclusive and useful to many more people.
We are delighted to see so many other Bristol organisations in the Portfolio, which will play a huge role in shaping the cultural future of this city. By 2022 we want Bristol to be even better at celebrating difference, and creating opportunities and careers that aren’t dependent on privilege. We look forward to working with Arts Council England, our Portfolio partners, and Bristol’s talented independent artists to help make this happen.
About Theatre Bristol
Theatre Bristol is a laboratory combining collective action for the arts with open, generous, grassroots support. We design and test new ideas that we believe have the potential to make large-scale change.
To create the conditions for great art to happen, we start with the people who make it. We offer free support to anyone from any background working in live performance, helping them make brilliant, distinctive art and giving them the confidence and tools to build careers as artists.
Our central ethos is when you share, everyone gets better, so as well as artist support we lead events and networks, host a user-generated website theatrebristol.net; research new ways of working and develop national and international exchange opportunities.
Theatre Bristol was inaugurated in 2004 and in 2012 became both an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and a Bristol City Council Key Arts Provider.
